Reading is a skill for life
Literacy is the most important aspect of early childhood education – reading is the gateway to learning about everything for the rest of a child’s life. A big part of teaching children to read is accurately assessing their progress so teachers know when a child needs extra help and when they’re ready to move ahead. LiTerrific streamlines, standardizes, and automates the literacy diagnostic assessment process. Our assessment results help teachers accelerate reading development toward grade level expectations.
We are in dire need of technology like LiTerrific. It gives you both the big picture, and the microlevel, phoneme error detection that is essential to mitigating the decline in literacy achievement over the last 4 years.
– Dr. Patricia Durham, Literacy Expert
Vision
LiTeriffic is an intuitive and automatic assessment program. We have created a tool that accurately and consistently assesses your students’ reading development. It provides you with the precise information that you need in order to efficiently and effectively teach them to become proficient readers.
How many different assessments do you have to use to get the full picture?
We want to offer you a single source of truth. We want to make the process simple, consistent, accurate, and most of all, useful.
I spend over 30 minutes per child in my class, at least twice per semester, assessing their reading skills. The assessment is essential to helping kids advance, but I also need the time to instruct.
– Corley Koprowski, Elementary School Teacher
For over 200 years, we have known that phonemic awareness and phonics are essential foundational skills for learning how to read. Once mastered, students can become fluent readers, freeing their cognitive resources to focus on the meaning of text. This allows a student to get more out of reading – from personal enjoyment, knowledge acquisition, to the ability to navigate our world.
At LiTerrific, we scrutinize and select the best research to inform our assessment. There are many processes necessary to become a skilled and proficient reader, and we assess them each discretely and provide detailed data to tailor instruction.
Methodology
How does it work?
LiTerrific’s web based software is simple.
-
Students are presented with a short, grade level appropriate passage, which they read into a microphone. They then retell the story in their own words.
-
LiTerrific’s phoneme detection technology categorizes errors to assess reading fluency and comprehension.
-
Educators get access to a comprehensive, interactive dashboard, capable of grouping students based on their needs.
This assessment is not a substitute for a teacher, but it is a powerful tool that frees them up for classroom instruction.
Who are we?
A software company dedicated to literacy.
The founders of LiTerrific have vastly different backgrounds, and have followed very different paths in their careers. They were brought together by a shared interest in future generations.
Over the last dozen years, Ryan watched his younger brother, Chase, grow into one of the foremost literacy experts in the United States. He watched him go from Pooh Bear, to Chaser, to Chase, to Dr. Chase Young, and has been inspired by the difference he has made in education. He wondered what it would be like if Chase could make an appearance in every single classroom in the country.
Enter Joe Ruffles. Joe brought his technical brilliance to bear on the problem: Let’s write the code. Let’s put Chase in a box. Chase-in-a-Box.
